Meta has finally unlocked a number of new native video recording settings for the Quest 2 VR headset, including 4K resolution and a 16:9 aspect ratio. The only problem is that the options are only available to developers.
The new developer hub update – which is only downloadable by those with an Oculus Developer account – has enabled several recording options. There is still the default 1:1 setting, 1024p @ 36fps, but now developers can choose between 1080p, 1440p or 2160p resolutions, each of which can be recorded at 36fps or 60fps.
There are also options to change the video bitrate from the standard 5 MBps to a maximum of 40 Mbps and to make the view monoscopic or stereoscopic – paving the way for more immersive VR game trailers.
Improved native video recording settings for Quest 2 have been something that VR developers and content creators have been asking for. Quest 2’s native 1:1 video recordings are great for Meta-owned Facebook and Instagram, but not so great on other platforms.
VR Game Trailers Should Be Better Than Before (Image credit: Meta)
By default, the Meta Quest 2 (formerly Oculus Quest 2) is set to record and display a 1:1 aspect ratio at 1024p resolution (slightly below HD at 1080p). To shape that square into a 16:9 video, you either need to add thick black rectangles on both sides or trim the image – potentially cropping important pixels.
External tools can allow content creators and developers to capture, but setting this up can be tricky. This native solution makes recording high resolution 16:9 images much simpler.
The reason 16:9 is important is that it’s the aspect ratio of pretty much every regular monitor – your TV and your PC monitor – which is what you’re likely to use to watch trailers on YouTube and other platforms for new VR games. While having the same aspect ratio isn’t a necessity, combining it will help make a trailer more visually appealing – potentially getting more players excited about what they see.
The same is also true for YouTube and Twitch content creators looking to release VR gameplay videos. Whether these developer features will be available to regular gamers remains to be seen, but Meta has previously acknowledged that wider video settings are a common demand from Quest headset owners.
One point that could be holding things back is the limited power of the Quest 2. As noted by Aldridge, games can have some issues when running at 4K as the headset simply doesn’t have enough power for higher resolutions. Fortunately, this is a problem that Project Cambria or Quest 3 can solve.
Bethesda’s upcoming sci-fi RPG Starfield is taking inspiration from the beloved FTL standalone spaceship simulator, and its in-game footage has given us a solid understanding of how exactly that happens.
Inspired by the indie game, Starfield’s space combat will involve redirecting energy to your ship’s various subsystems mid-flight. Game director Todd Howard said IGN (opens in new tab) in early June you will be switching power between various modules on your ship to keep your weapons and systems running.
“Your ship has several power systems,” Howard said.[There’s] a little bit of FTL in terms of putting how much power into three different weapon systems, then into their engines and shields, and the grav drive is what lets you jump in and out of some situations where you need to put power. ”
as seen in reddit (opens in new tab), the recent gameplay preview of Starfield shown during the Xbox and Bethesda Showcase of Summer Game Fest seems to demonstrate exactly how this power play works in-game. In the cockpit view, a panel on the left side of the screen displays what appears to be several ship modules, each with a power gauge.
bypass the compressor
Motor, shield and grav drive power are displayed, along with three other modules: LAS, BAL and MSL. These can be lasers, ballistics and missiles. It looks like you’ll switch power between them using the D-pad and have room to maximize output to the modules or pump power to them in discrete units.
Power management mechanics have become commonplace in all space simulators. Elite: Dangerous has a similar control system that allows it to prioritize power output to specific ship modules, distributing it around damaged components and power outages. We are yet to see if Starfield will include such a reactive system.
Power management isn’t the only thing Starfield will have in common with FTL. You’ll also be able to board enemy ships, although the process is a little more hands-on than the indie game’s automated combat.
“You can dock with other ships, you can deactivate them, you can board [them],” Howard said. “Actually, there are some missions that involve this. You can steal the ship. There’s dialogue in space, there’s star stations you can visit, there’s smuggling. All the things we would like.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Howard said that Starfield’s space combat was also inspired by the robotic fighting game MechWarrior. He said the development team relied on that game’s slower pace when it came to designing power systems and being able to accurately line up shots, rather than taking inspiration from any “nervous hunter”.
Howard’s mention of a grav drive is also interesting. We already know that Starfield will include faster-than-light travel in some form, but the notion of powering up your ship’s unit suggests that you’ll be able to launch yourself into hyperspace mid-combat. You can be surfing at lightning speed whenever you want.
To everyone’s surprise (except perhaps lead star Tom Cruise), Top Gun: Maverick blew up the global box office to become the biggest movie of the year (so far) and one of the most successful Hollywood sequels in recent memory.
Director Joseph KosinskiThe action-packed story of an aging aviation ace won over critics and audiences alike – we gave the film five stars in our brilliant review – and served as a timely reminder that Netflix and marvel movies are not the only order of the day in 2022.
It’s no wonder, then, that Top Gun fans are eager to know when they can enjoy Pete “Maverick” Mitchell’s long-awaited return from the comfort of their own homes. Details on the movie’s release on streaming services are still scarce, but below, we’ve rounded up everything we know so far.
Let’s start with what we know for sure – which, admittedly, isn’t much at this stage.
At the moment, Top Gun: Maverick is not available to stream anywhere in the world, mainly because the movie was only released in theaters on May 27th. Parent studio Paramount will be making a call on its physical and video-on-demand (VOD) release dates.
The post-theater release schedule for Paramount’s stable companion Sonic the Hedgehog 2, however, does provide a useful blueprint for when we can expect to enjoy the thrills of Top Gun: Maverick at home.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 became available for on-demand purchase and rent about three months after its theatrical release – if Top Gun: Maverick follows that pattern, we expect it to hit the virtual storefronts of Apple TV, Prime Video, Google Play, and a handful of others. lesser-known platforms sometime between August and September. If and when that happens, it’s likely to cost somewhere around $7.99 / £4.49 to rent and $19.99 / £13.99 to buy.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is getting a DVD and Blu-Ray release in early August, about four months after its theatrical release, so again, Top Gun: Maverick could follow that pattern with a physical release sometime between September. and October.
Will Top Gun: Maverick Coming to Paramount Plus?
As for when Top Gun: Maverick hits streaming services, the jury is still out. The movie will almost certainly do Paramount Plus his exclusive home, but it’s still unclear when it will be available to stream on the platform at a young age.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 arrived on Paramount Plus on the same day as its VOD release (i.e. three months after its theatrical debut, according to other recent projects from the studio), but Top Gun: Maverick likely won’t follow that pattern, due to to its stratospheric box office success.
As part of his bespoke movie deal, the film’s star Tom Cruise has the final word on when Top Gun: Maverick goes to Paramount Plus – and reports suggest Paramount is pushing him to agree to shorten the exclusivity. 120 days of the film. window in an attempt to capitalize on its popularity (i.e., attract more subscribers to Paramount Plus).
On the other hand, Cruise may lobby to extend Top Gun: Maverick’s theatrical release window in light of the film’s stellar performance. He’s, after all, a big believer in the cinematic experience, and it’s hard to see him signing off on a move that would bring his beloved big-screen project to streaming services sooner than absolutely necessary.
At the moment, then, we simply don’t know when Top Gun: Maverick will come to Paramount Plus. As mentioned, Paramount movies most often hit the streamer 120 days after their theatrical debuts, but Top Gun: Maverick could arrive earlier, on time, later — or potentially not at all. We will share more details when we have them.
Incidentally, Paramount Plus is now available in more regions than ever before. The service was recently launched in the UK, having debuted in the US last year, and costs $9.99 / £6.99 a month (or $4.99 a month for ad-supported viewing if you’re in the US). USA).
For our money though, Paramount Plus not yet able to compete with the likes of Netflix and Disney Plus — and studio execs are hoping that Top Gun: Maverick will change that reality sooner rather than later.
After removing it in an earlier version, Microsoft brought back the redesign of the ‘Open With’ dialog box for Windows 11, allowing you to open files in an app other than the one you set as the default.
This new design finally removes the confusion surrounding the message box since Windows 8, with dialog boxes not making it clear whether the file would open with a new default application in the future or if it was just for that one time.
There is often a time when you need to play a music file in an audio editing application rather than Windows Media Player, for example. This is where the ‘Open With’ feature comes in, allowing a different application to open a file.
was taken in Insider build 22563 (opens in new tab) in April, but reappeared in Build 25151 (opens in new tab). While the Insider program lets you test features that aren’t ready for a final release, it seems Microsoft is happy that this redesigned box is finally making its debut in Sun Valley 2, the first major update to Windows 11, later this year.
Analysis: A dialog that needed more love
Once again, we’re seeing Microsoft tinkering with parts of Windows even more to make it more modern and fresh for new and existing users, mostly thanks to its design features – Fluent Design and WinUI.
We’re already seeing the fruits of those efforts, with Paint and File Explorer getting new looks and useful features that users have wanted for years. However, this is clearly expanding to certain menus and boxes, such as the ‘Open With’ box.
In this new update we will finally see clearer language with two options – ‘Only once’ and ‘Always’. If you’ve used an Android smartphone or tablet, this might sound familiar as Google’s mobile operating system will ask the same questions if you have multiple apps that can open the same file type. It’s a quick and easy way to open files in the app you want and set default apps for certain file types if you want, and we’d like to see something similar in Windows 11.
This will help users who just want to open files in a different app just once without getting confused. We expect this to make it to Sun Valley 2, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see similar redesigns appear in future releases as we get closer to its release.
Windows 11 is still hampered by a weak pace of adoption, looking at the latest figures assessing the market share of Microsoft’s desktop operating system.
The report on Windows versions and their respective market share compiled by AdDuplex (opens in new tab) for June 2022 shows that Windows 11 is now on 23.1% of PCs included in the company’s numbers. (These are Windows machines running Microsoft Store apps that display AdDuplex ads).
As AdDuplex points out, in the last two months only an extra 3.4% of Windows PCs have been upgraded to Windows 11, which represents a rather slow overall rate of migration to the latest operating system.
Windows 10 versions make up the majority of the market, of course, with the most popular version being Windows 10 21H2 at 38.2%, and the 21H1 feature update second behind at 23.9%.
Analysis: Painfully slow progress for most of 2022
While a two-month gain of 3.4% isn’t something to shout about, it’s at least better than the previous two-month period, where Windows 11 only had 0.6% in terms of market share.
Windows 11 witnessed a 3.2% increase in February, mind you, which capped off a pretty robust adoption spike where the operating system doubled its share at the end of 2021. But since then, it’s all gone down a lot in AdDuplex stats. .
We should never read too much into just one set of numbers – they provide a snapshot of just a single facet of Windows 11’s popularity – but the statistics seem to broadly indicate that there has been a spike in early adoption from interested and more curious alike. types of computing, but since then, things have really slowed down.
With still a long way to go before Microsoft lowers the curtain on Windows 10 support (in late 2025), we can’t imagine that the pace of Windows 11 adoption is likely to accelerate anytime soon, although new desktops and laptops will ship with the Latest operating system pre-installed will gradually help adoption.
That said, there are a few key technologies that could eventually trigger wider adoption, and one that quickly springs to mind is DirectStorage on the gaming front, which should be a big boost for Windows 11. And not just for load times. SSD, but for smoother open world games (loading assets faster on-the-fly), the caveat is that games need to support it, and none do yet. (Although the first DirectStorage title, Forspoken, is expected to come to PC later this year.)
Smartphone maker Infinix, known for low-end and entry-level Android phones, has announced that its next flagship phone will come with support for 180W fast charging. If that happens, the company’s next phone will surpass the Realme GT Neo 3 and OnePlus 10R as the phones with the fastest charging technology.
Both the Realme GT Neo 3 and OnePlus 10R come with support for 150W fast charging and the Xiaomi 11i Hypercharge has 125W fast charging.
In the official announcement, the company revealed that the phone equipped with 180W charging support – called Thunder Charge Technology – will come with a 4,500mAh battery and can be charged from 1% to 50% in just 4 minutes. Although the company declined to reveal the time it takes to fully charge the phone.
Explaining the technology further, Infinix says the phone uses dual batteries rated 8C – the maximum charge rate for rechargeable lithium batteries in the industry today. The charging power of each battery is only 90W while charging. These batteries are custom made to ensure they do not heat up while charging.
The company says it uses three parallel charging pumps to ensure maximum power delivery to the battery. Infinix claims it uses 111 software and hardware safety protection mechanisms that prevent batteries from heating up and limit voltage and electromagnetic interference to help prevent battery and smartphone damage.
Last but not least, the portable charging pad will come with an encryption chip to ensure ultra-fast charging. If a user opts for a non-compatible charging cable, the charging speed will drop to 60W/100W.
That said, this isn’t Infinix’s first attempt at fame. The company had initially introduced 160W charging technology, however, has never been seen on a commercially available phone. However, it is very likely that the new charging technology will eventually reach the public.
How fast is fast enough?
Until recently, almost everyone carried a power bank to charge their phone on the go. While this was an extra investment, it was necessary because phones had smaller batteries and the included charging pads would take ages to charge the phone.
When brands like OnePlus revolutionized fast charging technology, charging the power bank became a thing of the past as it would hardly take half an hour to charge the phone. Even night charging has become obsolete.
However, many users are still troubled by the impacts of fast charging on battery health and overall device. Multiple phones catching fire or exploding only made matters worse.
So the need to create a good balance between fast charging and battery health needs to be maintained. While Xiaomi’s HyperCharge technology can charge the phone in just 17 minutes, Realme’s 150W takes even less time.
In all likelihood, charging the Infinix’s 180W should take around 10 minutes for a full charge – however – do you really need it or would you prefer a slightly larger battery with a moderate charging speed?
Samsung has been one of the only brands so far that has managed to release multiple iterations of its collapsible smartphones. And it looks like the South Korean tech giant is ready to test the waters for more budget models.
according to one report (opens in new tab) by the Korean technology publication Naver, Samsung began work on the development and design affordable folding devices. The report states that the project was initiated by Samsung Electronic’s Mobile Experience (MX) division. There have been previous reports that the company was targeting a 2024 release.
Samsung aims to bring an affordable Z Flip and Z Fold version to the international market. In India, we can see smartphones available for approximately Rs 60,000. Samsung’s folding lineup of the Z Flip 3 is priced at Rs 84,999 while the Z Fold 3 is priced at Rs 1,49,999. And these were just the base model prices.
If Samsung is really working to bring the price down by more than 20%, then there will certainly be some differences in the hardware. It was also previously suggested that Samsung will add these foldables to the A-series smartphones. These would introduce the essential features that complement the foldable device and its software. The most premium features will remain exclusive to premium Z-series products.
Samsung isn’t the first company to try out the affordable foldable smartphone. Rumors suggest that Oppo was also working on launching a low-cost foldable smartphone. These reports arrived shortly after the company launched Find N.
Sacrifice premium features for a still expensive device
Foldable smartphones have not yet become mainstream devices not only in India but internationally as well. Anyone who buys a folding one is sure to turn some heads and draw attention for sure. But, a foldable device that looks like any other device on the market and with a hefty price tag will also raise some eyebrows.
For one, foldable smartphones are still in their early stages. They still have a long way to go in terms of the technology used. Considering budgeting something so soon is a big commitment and a milestone to reach. There is no doubt that Samsung will be able to do this within the timeframe they set. But it seems more practical to wait for the company to tease the device by 2024. They could release it a few years later, after they’ve ironed out any shortcomings.
The second and biggest concern is the hardware and features of the device. Mainly for the price you will pay. Even for Rs 60,000 you can opt for the Galaxy S series. The A series aims to be premium features at affordable prices. Features not accessible at premium prices. If one is really interested in getting a foldable device, then the premium Z-series is the only logical option.
There are plenty of password managers out there to choose from – services that can remember all the passwords you use online – and some browsers, like Google Chrome, have this feature built into them. But most of them have a flaw that 1Password hopes to fix.
When you sign up for something, you can take one of two routes. There is the typically longer process where you provide the site with your email address, a password, and possibly some other data to create an entirely new account. Alternatively, you can choose to sign up using your account details from another service, a generally faster option. Unfortunately, the second option will not be remembered by your password manager.
Sometimes it’s easy to remember which account you signed up with. If you have the option to sign in to a service with your Google or Apple account, you probably signed up using the one linked to the smartphone you use every day (Android or iPhone, respectively).
But other sites might force you to remember if you used Google, Apple, Microsoft, Facebook, Twitter, Steam, or one of several other options. Only one of them will log in to the desired account, while the rest will set up a new account.
1Password wants to end it confusion (opens in new tab) (through On the edge) (opens in new tab). When you sign in to a service using your Google account (or one of many others) New 1Password beta feature (opens in new tab) remember that this was the option you chose. The next time you log in, 1Password will remind you which account you used and you can authenticate your data just as easily with a normal password and email logins.
If you want to try out 1Password’s new tool, there’s a downside: you’ll have to pay for the service. a basic personal signature (opens in new tab) costs $2.99 per month when billed annually and a Families Plan (opens in new tab) costs $4.99 per month for five people when billed annually. If you want to try it out first, there’s a 14-day free trial. This will give you a sense of how much more useful the updated 1Password is compared to the free options before you spend anything on it.

AMD’s Ryzen 7000 desktop processors could launch in mid-September, if the internal sources are to be believed.
This rumor comes from DigiTimes (opens in new tab) – not always the most reliable outlet in our experience, but that being said, the supply chain conversation is definitely worth hearing about – and the claim of a mid-September release comes from motherboard manufacturer sources. (These companies are, of course, making AM5 mobos with a new socket for AMD’s high-end desktop chips.)
The sources claim the launch is scheduled for this month to allow room for continued sales of current generation Ryzen 5000 CPUs, which are apparently ‘excessive’ in stock at OEMs and presumably retailers as well.
Of course, once the Ryzen 7000 chips are revealed, and we get a glimpse of what they can actually do – and this is rumored to be a lot, in terms of it being an all-new Zen 4 architecture – the Ryzen 5000 processors will suddenly be in much less demand as people will be tempted to wait for the more robust formation around the corner.
Analysis: Raptor Lake should not leave the gate first
Take all of this with a good old-fashioned dose of skepticism, as always with this kind of ‘supposed sources’ report, but there are several rumors that back this up. One of which claims a September 15th release date for the Ryzen 7000, which is mid-September, of course – while granted, it’s in shaky territory. There were other rumors of a September release before that, so the weight of the rumors is growing.
It’s also interesting to hear that selling through current-gen Ryzen shares is a concern here – which suggests that, in fact, AMD could get the Ryzen 7000 out of the door sooner if it wanted to, and the situation allowed for that.
To us, AMD really should release the Ryzen 7000 before Raptor Lake, simply because, as it stands, the Ryzen 5000 is feeling pretty dated and has lost ground to Intel’s current Alder Lake processors – which are widely considered to be the best. choice for players now. Therefore, Team Red cannot let Raptor Lake into town without an answer, so to speak.
The Zen 4 certainly seems like a convincing answer, but the rumors surrounding Intel’s 13th Gen CPUs are that they will take the goods out of the gaming bag, so all this leads us to believe that AMD should be confident it still can. beat Raptor Lake with a September release.
If, of course, any of the speculations we’re hearing are correct. The last we hear is that Raptor Lake is slated for October, so that would fit this photo.
If Zen 4 processors appear in September, it is likely that only a small number of models will be on sale to begin with. These could be the Ryzen 7950X, 7900X, 7800X, and 7600X, according to another leak, and that would make sense as these were the early tiers of CPUs released with current-gen Ryzen chips.
