With AMD recently confirming increased availability of the Threadripper Pro, distributors rushed to start selling the first Threadripper 5995WX online. O 64 core monster cpu was unveiled in March 2022 along with a 32-core and 24-core part with Lenovo and dell having announced work stations based on this new zen 3 processor family.
An online search for the ThreadRipper Pro 5995WX brought up two interesting results. The first was from channel specialist Connection, who lists the item as temporarily OOS with a sticker price of $7,359.95 (you can also rent it for $211.69 a month, but that might not be a good idea. idea, as high-end processor prices don’t depreciate fast enough to justify leasing).
The second is Alibaba, where the Chinese server specialist Shenzhen Chengdaxin Technology (opens in new tab) is selling the piece for just $5,000, a 33% discount compared to its aforementioned American rival. Unfortunately, you will need to go through a KYC (know your customer) process before purchasing the part.

The previous Threadripper Pro, the 3995WX, was released in July 2020and carried a suggested retail price of just $5,500.
The price increase was not matched (as was the case with the previous generation) with the doubling of the core count, likely because applications targeting ThreadRipper Pro would not take full advantage of 128 cores (or 256 threads). This remains the exclusivity of the EPYC line, aimed at cloud computing, hyperscalers and data centers.
The 5995WX has a base speed of 2.7 GHz, 256 MB L3 cache and supports up to 128 PCIe 4.0 lanes; it has a TDP of 280W and a maximum clock speed of 4.5GHz, which is the same on all new Threadripper Pro processors.
You should be able to use motherboards with WRX80 chipset and sWRX8 socket to host the new parts; just keep in mind that you might need a firmware update. The same applies to existing workstations.
