Apple Maps — the iPhone maker’s version of Google Maps — wants to get you out of your car and onto an e-bike — or e-bike — for at least a day.
While examining application code Steve Moser (opens in new tab) I discovered that several lines refer to an “E-Bike” and finding optimized routes for this type of vehicle.
it’s still not clear as the these routes would be chosen exactly, but we expect the routes to be similar to those optimized for regular bikes – albeit with a few more inclines and a preference for following roads over bumpier bike lanes.
The feature code has yet to be finalized, indicating that it is still in early testing phases and not yet ready for release.
But the existence of the code strongly suggests that Apple is gearing up for e-bikes to become increasingly popular as people ditch their cars for cheaper, greener options.
Apple’s goal here may be to integrate e-bike routing with the Apple Watch’s e-bike detection, meaning any journey started can start an e-bike workout, or vice versa.
An electrifying future
The best electric bikes or e-bikes are great for commuting – and great for getting more out of your ride in general. They look like a pretty normal bike, but they’re equipped with an electric battery that can propel you forward when you don’t want to push too hard.
This engine is especially useful when paired with a folding e-bike; the normally smaller wheels on a folding bike mean you have to work a little harder to travel, but that’s not so much the case with a motorized electric bike.
As good as e-bikes are – they are much more compact and eco-friendly than a car – they also cost a lot more than a standard two-wheeled vehicle.
Our pick for the best e-bike right now, the Specialized Turbo Vado 4.0, will set you back $4,000 / £3,900 / AU$5,000 – but there are cheaper alternatives too.
That said, with the price of gas as high as it is now, it might not be long before an e-bike ends up saving you money on your daily commute.
