Intel has announced that its innovation event for this year will take place on September 27 and 28, quickly fueling speculation that this is where we could see the launch of the next-gen Raptor Lake desktop processors.
Intel Innovation is a conference where developers and the ‘tech elite’ come together for various workshops, demos and so on, mostly focused on AI, cloud, computing and future, well, innovations.
It’s also our “chance to hear about the latest releases” and, as you may recall, at last year’s Intel Innovation, the chip giant launched new processors in the form of Alder Lake.
So the obvious expectation is that we might see Raptor Lake revealed at Innovation 2022 as these high-end CPUs are just around the corner and should be released around this time.
Analysis: Are we going to race with Raptor Lake in early October then?
If you remember, Alder Lake’s reveal at last year’s Intel Innovation was a big deal and involved showing off the main CPU, at 12900K, being overclocked (by ‘Splave’) and setting some new records in the process (hitting 6.8 GHz). This happened at the event that took place on October 27th and 28th, with the Alder Lake desktop chips actually going on sale on November 4th, 2021 (officially, anyway, although some retailers got a little too hasty).
We can then theorize that Raptor Lake processors could be revealed on September 27th and then go on sale in the first week of October. What makes this more likely is that we’ve seen a number of rumors popping up lately about Raptor Lake, which points to the launch approaching, and some of these speculations have already suggested that Intel is targeting an October release. date for 13th generation chips; so it all fits together perfectly. That doesn’t mean it’s going to happen, of course, but there seems to be a pretty compelling argument here in our books.
If Raptor Lake chips hit shelves in early October, that could beat AMD in terms of next-gen launch time. Team Red, of course, has its Ryzen 7000 processors coming towards the end of this year, and the current expectation is that those processors could also launch in September, but that too will likely be an early reveal. And with talk of AMD needing to clear the ‘excess’ Ryzen 5000 stock ahead of the Zen 4 launch, if Intel is going on sale in early October, there is a possibility that Team Blue could deliver that first major blow. . the battle of next-gen CPUs.
With a lot of rumors floating around lately around the impressive performance boost that could be introduced by Raptor Lake at this point, perhaps the main question that remains on the lips of many is: how is Intel going to price 13th Gen silicon?
The worrying buzz on the vine is that Team Blue may be looking to raise asking prices for its chips, and that could include Raptor Lake – although high prices will fall as consumers are pressured by inflation and the rising cost of living, we will have to see. If that happens, of course, and we should be very cautious about assuming anything on that front.
