Smartphone maker Oppo is working on some foldable phones for the mass market. While one of these two next phones was talked about before and expected to be a rival to the Galaxy Z Flip 3, the other could be a successor to Oppo’s first foldable phone, Find N.
according to one report (opens in new tab) citing a renowned Chinese Tipster, Digital Chat Station, the second device was codenamed Dragonfly.
One of these two devices is expected to ship with a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC, the other could have a MediaTek Dimensity SoC under the hood – making it the first foldable phone to do so.
Talking about the Oppo Find N2, the insider claims that it will follow the design language of the brand’s first foldable phone and will have an inward-folding display with a 120Hz refresh rate.
The company is said to have worked on several reported issues in the first iteration, however the company decided to keep the format compact.
There isn’t much information available about these two devices other than these random rumours. Some time ago we heard that the company seems to be testing some foldable phones in the European and Asian markets, however we will have to wait for a formal announcement from the company.
Competition will only help in the democratization of technology
Oppo isn’t the only smartphone maker other than Samsung that is looking to make foldable phones. Brands such as Xiaomi and Vivo have already launched their cell phones in the national market and are probably working on the latest generation devices.
Interestingly, Samsung is also working on several folding phones and is likely aiming to debut one of the cheapest folding phones by 2024.
In addition to challenges such as the fragility of the foldable display, the high cost of acquisition remains one of the biggest challenges in the mass adoption of foldable phones.
If we just have more smartphone manufacturers joining the bandwagon and improving the technology, it will soon become more accessible and available to everyone.
